The D. Diogo de Sousa Museum was created in 1918, as a Museum of Archaeology and art with the objective to prevent the dispersion of the local heritage until then in the possession of private individuals and other institutions.
In 1980, with its revitalization of the Museum's mission has been redefined as a scientific and cultural agency under the discipline of archaeology to fulfill its basic activities in the fields of research, museology, cultural dissemination, education and support the protection and preservation of the archaeological heritage.
